The sooner you start looking for your pet, the more likely it is that you\u2019ll find him\/her! Here are some best practices:<\/p>\n<p><strong>First, check if your pet has been found:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Visit the Napa County Animal Shelter (942 Hartle Court in Napa), or call 707.253.4382 to see if your pet is there.\u00a0You can also view photographs and brief descriptions of pets that are at the Shelter on their <a href=\"https:\/\/services.countyofnapa.org\/PetAdoption\/Home\/LostnFound\">lost and found<\/a> web page.<\/p>\n<p>Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/1528329097403205\/\">Missing Pets of the Napa Valley<\/a> facebook page to see if anyone has found your pet.<\/p>\n<p>Napa County Animal Services, a division of the Napa County Sheriff&#8217;s office, is responsible for responding to calls about stray animals.\u00a0They cover all of the unincorporated areas of Napa County and the City of American Canyon and the City of Napa.<\/p>\n<p>The Town of Yountville, the City of St. Helena, and the City of Calistoga do not contract with the County for those services.\u00a0 In those areas you will also want to contact:<\/p>\n<p>In the Town of Yountville, call the Napa County Sheriff&#8217;s Department Yountville substation &#8211; 707.944.9228<\/p>\n<p>In the City of St. Helena, call the St. Helena Police Department &#8211; 707.967.2850<\/p>\n<p>In the City of Calistoga, call the Calistoga Police Department &#8211; 707.942.2810<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, you&#8217;ll want to contact the local veterinary clinics, as Good Samaritans will often take found pets there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If your pet was not found:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Search for unusual &#8220;hiding&#8221; places around your home, like storm drains, ditches, and other dark places. (Don\u2019t forget to bring a flashlight!) If your lost pet has been injured, it may have crawled into a small space close to home for safety. Make plenty of noise as you search. Call him\/her by name, make familiar sounds, and\/or bring along a favorite squeaky toy to help&#8230;but be sure to stop and listen periodically, in case the pet responds (typically with whining, barking, or meowing).<\/p>\n<p>If the pet doesn\u2019t turn up, file a missing pet report with the Napa County Animal Shelter. You can do it in person (at 942 Hartle Court in Napa), or by calling 707.253.4382.<\/p>\n<p>If your pet is microchipped, contact the microchip company to ensure that they have your current contact information and to inform them that your pet is missing.\u00a0 Also call your veterinary clinic to alert them that your pet is lost.<\/p>\n<p>Create colorful &#8220;Lost Pet&#8221; flyers that will capture people\u2019s attention. Some tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Include a picture of your pet as well as a general description and your telephone number.\u00a0 Make sure the text is large enough that the flyer can be read at a distance.<\/li>\n<li>If you can, offer a reward (but don&#8217;t say how much).<\/li>\n<li>DO NOT include your address or your full name, to protect against fraud or identity theft.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s also important to make sure you don\u2019t disclose <em>all<\/em> of your pet&#8217;s specific identifying characteristics in the flyer photo and description. Keeping a few identifying details secret gives you a way to determine whether a caller truly has your pet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is a downloadable flyer template <a href=\"http:\/\/www.petbond.com\/flyerentry.php?pid=128177\">here<\/a>, as well.<\/p>\n<p>Post flyers in your neighborhood \u2013 on poles and other street structures, at stores (grocery stores, drug stores, gas stations, and the like), veterinary clinics, groomers, local parks, etc.\u00a0Any time you\u2019re posting a flyer at a veterinary clinic or groomer\u2019s, take a moment to personally tell the staff about your lost pet. That way, if your pet is brought in to them by someone else, they will have your story and information readily available and can contact you more easily.<\/p>\n<p>Talk to your mail carrier, newspaper delivery person and anyone who is regularly in your neighborhood, and ask them to look out for your lost pet.<\/p>\n<p>Take someone with you and go door-to-door talking to all the residents in the area where your pet was lost. Leave a flyer with each person you speak to. If no one&#8217;s home, attach a flyer to the door. You&#8217;ll be surprised how many neighbors will keep an eye out once they know your beloved companion is missing.<\/p>\n<p>Post a missing pet report on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/1528329097403205\/\">Missing Pets of the Napa Valley<\/a> facebook page, <a href=\"https:\/\/sfbay.craigslist.org\/\">Craigslist<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nextdoor.com\/city\/napa--ca\/\">Napa Nextdoor<\/a>, and any other online local community pages you can think of.\u00a0 When posting, follow the same guidelines as for your flyer (see above).<\/p>\n<p>Place a &#8220;lost pet&#8221; ad in your local newspaper(s), using the same guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>Be diligent and don&#8217;t give up hope!\u00a0 Pets have been found weeks, months, and even years after going missing.<\/p>\n<p>If you are reunited with your pet and s\/he wasn&#8217;t previously <a href=\"https:\/\/napahumane.org\/keep-your-pet-healthy\/microchipping\/\">microchipped<\/a>, we encourage you to make that a priority.\u00a0And, in the case of dogs, be sure to have them licensed \u2013 having both a microchip and a license greatly increases their chances of finding their way home.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What To Do If You Have Lost\u00a0A Pet As soon as you realize your pet is lost, it\u2019s time to take action.
